94.7 KMET peaked in the late 1970s and 1980s: KMET reached its height in popularity during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Its lineups featured prominent rock DJs like Jeff Gonzer, Bob Coburn, Cynthia Fox, and Jim Ladd.

For much of its history, KMET played a freeform and progressive rock format. This allowed disc jockeys to have creative freedom over their playlists and on-air commentary, playing longer tracks and more eclectic artists than typical top-40 stations.

The end of an era: KMET signed off the air on February 14, 1987, when Metromedia abruptly fired the entire staff and switched the station’s format to a smooth jazz station called “The Wave”. This sudden switch angered many loyal fans and was widely mourned as the end of an important era of rock radio.
